Lesson: What Famous Explorer would you like to be in History?

Author: Carol Carbin
Subject Area: Social Studies
Grade Level: 4 - 5

Introduction

Students will be assigned to pick an explorer to then make a project on it. The students will be asked certain questions to then get more information about the person to then explain who and what they did to the class.

Goals

Your goal is to find 5 interesting facts about that one person. Also, to say the time period when they were famous and certain events that they accomplished during that time.

Directions

The students will look on websites to find information about the explorers. Only education sites will be available for them to search for information. Once they find a site, they will read over the article and then see what information they find on that one person. Once they have completed the information part, they will be asked to make a power point to present to the class what they found.

Now that you have an idea of who you want to research, find the explorer on this website and click on the external links. This will take the student to other articles to find out more about who they were during that time. It is good because some articles have pictures of places and of the explorer as well as information about their achievements.

Activity: Test what you know about your explorer

Once the student clicks on the site, click on"all about explorers" at the top of the website. Once you clicked on that, then you can either read more about your explorer and get more facts by clicking on "Explorers: A to Z" that will help with more information. If you think you have enough information, then go to the tab that says "Treasure Hunts" then find your explorer. These are facts that you can find either through the information that you already know or go to the article on this website to find the answers. It is a fun way to learn and play a hunting game.
